BOONDOCKING CAMPSITE NEAR GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK

This campsite is about 15 miles outside of Great Sand Dunes National Park and has amazing views of Blanca Peak in Alamosa.  It’s on BLM Land (Bureau of Land Management), so it’s free dry camping for up to 14 nights.   If the Piñon Flats Campground inside the park is full (or if you don’t want to pay the nightly fee), this is a great alternative near the park.

DISPERSED CAMPING NEAR GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK

This site is massive and can fit multiple campers or vehicles and is definitely big enough for a large motorhome. There were 2 other vehicles that joined us in this particular site and there were dozens of others dotted along the hillside even further down the road. This particular site was only about a half mile from the paved Highway 150.

If you are in a large motorhome, this site can accommodate you and has plenty of room to turn around. Just be sure it is unoccupied before making the drive down. You should be able to see it from the highway to determine if it is available. The road is dirt, but we went during the wet season in May and it was still a very hard-packed dirt road and not mud.

Our favorite part about this campsite, other than it being so close to Great Sand Dunes National Park, was that it was so open and provided gorgeous 360 degree views of the area. It was gorgeous. For a free campsite near Great Sand Dunes National Park, it couldn’t have been any more perfect.

This site was amazing! We were sad that the Great Sand Dunes CG was closed and wanted to find something in a natural setting nearby. You're right about the ample space, the views, etc. Thank you!
