FORMERLY: ADVENTURE IN A BACKPACK

A New Direction: #KnowYourBrand

After traveling 8,101 miles across North America, we have discovered a newfound passion in our lives: conservation.  During our travels, we have seen some amazing lands, and we have over and over been taken aback by the beauty of this world.  Over the last four months, we have learned more and more about conservation and reducing our impact on the world, and we want to share that with our followers!

We have learned over the last 8,101 miles that we are both incredibly passionate about conservation!

Reducing Impact: Simple Changes

In the midst of all of the beauty that we have seen, we have also been saddened by the amount of disrespect for the earth that has been displayed.  From graffiti on the beautiful sandstone arches in Utah to Starbucks cups thrown in a bush once their original owner was finished with them, we have witnessed more than we can stand of this behavior.  Now, I know we aren’t going to stop all of it from happening, but by taking a step in the right direction and inspiring those who will listen, we hope to reduce the impact humans have on the earth.  Every bit helps.

We have witnessed some very disturbing behavior during our travels.

We have witnessed some very disturbing behavior during our travels.

There are many simple changes that each of us can make in our lives (us included!) that will help reduce impact and increase sustainability of our lifestyles.  Over the next few months, we will be talking more about these simple changes.  For us, the big change will be coming very soon: we are selling our RV!

We want to do our part to educate people to stop destroying nature.

Backpack 2.0

We are going to be buying a van, building it out, and loading it with eco-friendly options.  We are so excited about this build, as it will give us the ability to visit more places with less impact.  Aptly named Backpack 2.0, this van will be loaded with a killer solar system and a prototype rainwater filtration system.  We will be using as many eco-friendly building materials as we possibly can, and of course installing our composting toilet.  With this design, we will be self-sustaining for all of our major utilities.

UPDATE: Our dream is coming to fruition and we are in the process of building Backpack 2.0 in all of its glory.  Check out the Van Build HERE!

Our new van build will feature a killer solar system and a prototype rainwater filtration system.

Topping off this incredible build, we are going to be making a PUBLIC charging and water fill station on the van.  This means that when we are parked at trailheads, crags, and put-ins, all of our fellow explorers will be encouraged to charge up their cameras and phones and fill their water bottles after a long day of adventure.  And while they charge and fill, we will chat with them about simple changes they can make in their lives to reduce their impact.  Win-win!

This PUBLIC charging station and water fill station will allow our fellow adventurers to benefit from our solar system and rainwater filtration.

#KnowYourBrand

All of this is great, but there is one other piece to this story to make it really interesting.  We are launching a new campaign called #KnowYourBrand.  As we explore the west coast, we will be meeting with brands in the outdoor industry and learning what steps they have taken to reduce their impact.  We will be touring facilities and showing our followers what eco-friendly changes they have made in their manufacturing and distribution processes.  We will be showcasing any and all efforts that these companies have made to increase awareness and reduce impact.  We are so excited to be able to show off some of the amazing conservation efforts that have been happening behind the scenes.

We are visiting with outdoor brands to launch our new campaign #KnowYourBrand, and learning what steps they are taking to reduce their impact.

After our build is complete, we will continue touring more and more companies across North America.  Our goal is to provide our fans with the information they need to make decisions of which company they would like to support based on conservation efforts.

We hope you guys are as excited about this as we are.  Let us know if you know of a company along the west coast that we should be meeting with.  Visit our Work With Us page if you own a company and are interested in working with us on this campaign.

Let us know if you know of outdoor brands that are making great strides in their conservation efforts! We’d love to add them to our list!

Thanks so much for your support! We really have been saddened by how much disrespect we have seen. But, all we can do is educate others and spread the word! 🙂

Love the new Backpack 2.0 design! Great concept to allow others to charge and refill. Hope to cross paths with you 2 sometime in your travels across this country. I am often amazed at the disrespect people show for our natural environment and I’m trying to make sure to teach my kids to leave only footprints and take only memories. Safe Travels!

Y’all should definitely check out Zero Motorcycles (zeromotorcycles.com/contact.php) in Scotts Valley, CA.

They’re the leading manufacturer of all-electric motorcycles; US-based and American Made. Their products prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that sustainability, while good for the planet, can be thrilling, aesthetically pleasing and super practical. There’s a Zero DS in my future for sure.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park on the way to Santa Cruz, as well as Monterey and it’s neighbor, Pacific Grove. Then, of course, there’s 17-mile drive, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Big Sur. So much beauty that’s sure to blow you away. Great photo opps at every turn, too.
