IMPORTANT!!! This diagram is, indeed, pretty detailed. YOU MUST STILL READ AND FOLLOW YOUR USER/INSTALLATION MANUAL WHEN INSTALLING THIS EQUIPMENT. In case of an error in the diagram above, your user manual will always superscede the diagram you see on this page.

Known issues with the diagram above:

  • The shunt in the diagram is backwards. On the side of the shunt, there is a label that says which side goes to the battery and which side goes to the load. Please follow the orientation on the side of the shunt.
  • The shore power cord has a male plug on both ends. Shore power extension cords do not have male plugs on each end. This would be incredibly dangerous. Please do not splice a shore power cord so there is a male on each end. The shore power cord in the parts list below is accurate and has a male end on one side and a female end on the other.

200 Amp Hour - 350 Watt Camper Van Solar Kit

Warren Grant

Thursday 29th of October 2020

Hi Explorist, I have been given you web site by Mike (Caravan Plus) who said you may be able to direct me the right way to put Solar on my 22 ft caravan. I am planning a long trip next year and am trying to prepare properly in order to cover free camping along the way. What do you run of the supply – fridge, tv, lights – the lot at once or some at a time… My questions are: • What size solar panels do I need eg: 100w, 300 w or more etc. 2 or one panel units with some spare capacity ? • Do I need to fit a second battery to the van as well. I currently have two batteries in the Landcruiser • What brands do you recommend to consider • Who installs them * What size regulator should I used 20A, 30A or 60A • How much would system cost • Did the units come with all the attachments • What items have I missed • What would you recommend. • Any other issues you would like to mention

I am not a handyman and hope you can advise me. regards, Warren Grant

How did you determine the fuse size for the distribution box?

Nate Yarbrough

Monday 26th of October 2020

Although this 12v fuse block does not specifically list a maximum Amperage rating... Blue Sea 12v fuse blocks are rated to 100A of power. And since this panel can accept 6 AWG wire, that fuse size is consistant with that wire size for wire with 105 degree insulation and that is what the fuse size for the 12v DC side of this panel is rated for.

I'm trying to understand why you have 6/3 coming out of the inverter and into the load distribution box, which would be a much smaller possible load (20 amps or so?), and 10/3 coming from shore power into the inverter, which would carry up to 30amps. It seems like you would want the larger wire coming from shore power. What am I missing here?

Nate Yarbrough

Sunday 13th of September 2020

Sure! That's to handle the 'PowerAssist' function of the Victron Multiplus. Shore power is coming in at up-to 30A, which requires 10/3 wire. Now... lets say you are running the air conditioner, space heater, and trying to brew a pot of coffee; all of which equals more than 30 amps. The PowerAssist function in the Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger will 'Add' power to an underperforming shore power connection by supplementing the shore power with battery power as needed. So, if we have a 2000w Inverter like in this diagram, that means we could have (2000w/120v=16A) 16A added to our 30A shore power for a total of 46A of available potential heading to our power distribution box. This requires 6/3 wire protected by a 50A breaker.

Hi Nate, I do not see the 250 AMP or 300 AMP Terminal Fuse listed in your wiring diagram. Would you let me know if needed, and if so where to apply in the diagram? Your work on this site and accompanying videos are extremely helpful! Scott

Nate Yarbrough

250A terminal fuse is attached to the starting battery. 300A is attached to the house battery bank.

Thanks for your work with all the solar diagrams and YouTube videos. Can I simply plug a 3000 watt inverter in place of the 2000 watt and use all the same fuses and wire gauges? Thanks, Mark

Nate Yarbrough

Sunday 5th of July 2020

Nope. Wires and fuses need to be larger. Here is a diagram that shows a 3000w inverter: https://www.explorist.life/3000w-inverter-400-600ah-400-to-1200w-solar-camper-solar-kit/
